Nestled in the heart of the Southern Alps, the Cardrona Valley offers some of the best conditions on Earth for stargazing.
With a hot chocolate in hand, take in the incredible light show while your guide covers highlights of the Southern Sky, constellations, movements of planets, celestial navigation and general information about what can be seen with and without the aid of a telescope.
Combine Stargazing with a dinner at The Mezz (The Lounge Friday nights)
The first part is a naked eye astronomy tour. Your guide will talk about the night sky specific to our location in New Zealand. You’ll cover highlights of the Southern Sky, constellations, movements of planets, celestial navigation, and general information about what can be seen without the aid of a telescope.
In the second half of the tour, you’ll use our top of the line portable telescope to see (when visible):
- Star clusters and nebulae
- The Highlands, Maria and craters of our Moon
- The moons of Jupiter
- Rings of Saturn
- Binary stars
- Other galaxies
Your guide will explain what you’re looking at, and why it’s so cool!
Optional :
If you want you can choose only the tour ((no dinner or transport) or also you can add to the Alpine by night.

Nestled in the heart of the Southern Alps, the Cardrona Valley offers some of the best conditions on Earth for stargazing. Not only does it have a dark sky with minimal light pollution, but it’s far enough south to have a great vantage point to view the famous Southern Sky, and you may even see the Southern Lights!
Tour Particulars:
Duration : 1 Hour 30 Minutes. Departure Location : Transport is available from Wanaka and Queenstown. Departure Time : Wanaka (departing at 6.15pm) and Queenstown (departing at 5.45pm). Also there is a shuttle from the bottom of the Cardrona mountain road at 6.30pm. Departure Dates : Tour times vary throughout the season..( subject to weather conditions.) Pace : Relax Level of fitness required : Very Easy
What to bring:
Summer & winter : It will be pretty chilly up on the mountain at night, so bring plenty of layers. The activity provide luxuriously warm Canada goose down jackets and snow boots.

- Schedule is subject to weather conditions. A call will be made at 5pm and any guests that have booked will be notified - guest phone number is required for all bookings..

Cancellation policy
- Where the date of cancellation is a date 45 days or more before the start of the tour, the cancellation fee will be equivalent to the deposit paid
- Where the date of cancellation is a date 30 to 45 days before the start of the tour the cancellation fee shall be 25% of the contract price
- Where the date of cancellation is a date 7 to 30 days before the start of the tour the cancellation fee shall be 50% of the contract price
- Where the date of cancellation is a date 7 days or less before the start of the tour the cancellation fee shall be 100% of the contract price
