Sunday afternoon cruise
Is one of sheer delight, featuring a combination of highlights from our Ship Cove Cruise and Motuara Island Bird sanctuary Eco Tour. You will cruise to the outer reaches of the Queen Charlotte Sound where you will visit Motuara Island, a 'predator free bird sanctuary'. Spend thirty minutes here and encounter the variety of birds that inhabit this wonderful island. If you're lucky you may even catch a glimpse of a 'Little Blue Penguin'. After leaving Motuara Island you will cruise to historical Ship Cove, named by Captain Cook in 1770. Here you will have the opportunity to go ashore for a 15 minute stroll on the beach with the resident Oyster Catchers, Paradise Ducks and the native Wood Hens (Weka) and visit Captain Cook's monument to commemorate his visits here. Jump aboard again and begin to make your way home, viewing the Salmon Farm in Ruakaka Bay along the way.
Motuara Island Bird Watchers cruise
A morning departure out to the stunning Motuara Island. Spend 1 hour ashore to enjoy the native birdlife and immerse yourself in the natural surroundings and stunning veiws. Motuara Bird Sanctuary Island attracts bird lovers from all over the world. All introduced pests were removed in the early 1990's and the island is now home to a variety of native species having struggled to survive, or died out on the mainland. Many of these are critically endangered and this Island provides them with a secure future. Some of the wildlife you will see includes, Saddleback (tieke), NZ Robin (toutouwai), Bellbird (korimako), Tui, Grey Warbler (riroriro), NZ Pigeon (kereru), Silver Eye (tauhou), Fantail (piwakawaka), the endangered South Island Saddleback, the very rare King Shag, Maud Island Frog and the Marlborough Green Gecko. On arrival at this magnificent island you will hear a chorus of songs from the local inhabitants. You get approximately one hour to enjoy this Island. Follow the track which winds up to the highest point of the island and there awaits fantastic views across to Ship Cove. There is a spectacular view to the North Island from the Cook Straight Lookout. Lift the lid on one of many wooden nestling boxes along the track and a sleepy Little Blue Penguin may just glance up to see who is watching over him.
Morning Tea in the Sounds
Depart Picton at 8:00am and cruise up through the Queen Charlotte Sound while enjoying your skipper's commentary on the surrounds, residents and local wildlife. Take in the stunning views of Motuara Bird Island and historical Ship Cove, a favourite anchorage of Captain Cook before being dropped off in the Endeavour Inlet at Punga Cove Resort for 1 hour (approx). Punga Cove is just the place for a relaxing morning tea. The resort is set in picture perfect surroundings, breath taking views across the Endeavour Inlet.
